Clear Winner in Head-to-Head Battle Between NBC's 'The Voice' and ABC's 'Dancing' TVbytheNumbers
NBC and ABC waged a head-to-head battle Monday night between their two-hour reality competitions, with ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" challenging NBC's "The Voice" in what has recently become a dominant night for the Peacock Network. When the dust settled, NBC had another big win in the key 18-49 demo, based on Nielsen overnights.
It helped that CBS aired almost all reruns and finished in fifth place for the night among the broadcast networks. But TVbytheNumbers.com reports that in the head-to-head showdown, NBC’s “The Voice” more than doubled the demo number for ABC’s “Dancing” -- delivering a 4.8 average rating in 18-49 vs. “Dancing’s” 2.1.
The story in total viewers was dramatically different, with the two reality competitions finishing in almost a dead heat. Reflecting the older audience for the ABC show, “Dancing” delivered 13.58 million total viewers to place a close second to the 13.90 million who turned out for “The Voice.”
Both shows were down a bit in the 18-49 demo: “The Voice” lost ground after last week’s season high of 5.2, while “Dancing” slipped one-tenth from its 2.2 a week ago.
Fox was competitive with ABC during the two-hour block, drawing a 1.9 average rating in viewers 18-49 for “Bones” and rising to a 2.4 for “The Following.” “Bones” equaled last week’s number while “Following” bounced back three-tenths from its series low a week ago.
CBS’s only fresh program was “Rules of Engagement,” which plunged six-tenths of a point in adults 18-49 to an all-time low for the series, a 1.5 average.
NBC and ABC continued their battle to the 10 p.m. hour, leading out from their competition programs with two dramas -- NBC’s “Revolution” and ABC’s “Castle” -- that battled to a draw, with both shows pulling 2.2 average ratings in the 18-49 demo. “Revolution” equaled its number from two weeks ago while “Castle” improved two-tenths from last week. But ABC dominated the hour in total viewers, averaging 11.71 million to NBC’s 6.24 million, just enough to push ABC ahead in total viewers for the night as a whole.
“Castle” also improved one-tenth on its “Dancing with the Stars” lead-in in the 18-49 demo.
The numbers for prime time overall saw NBC comfortably ahead in viewers 18-49 with a 3.9 average rating, followed by ABC (2.1 average), Fox (2.1), Univision (1.5) and CBS (1.3). ABC won total viewers with 13.0 million, followed by NBC’s 11.3 million, Fox’s 6.9 million, CBS’s 5.0 million and Univision’s 3.6 million.
