ESPN Viewers Grumbling About Coverage of Boston Marathon Tragedy

ESPN has been taking heat over its coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing. Some viewers weren’t happy about the sports channel devoting airtime to covering the attack, and took to Twitter to complain, reports the New York Post.

One viewer wrote: "ESPN needs to stop trying to be CNN! I get what happened was horrible but your a SPORTS broadcasting network.”

Another complained: "go back to doing what you do best, kissing Miami’s ass [meaning the league-leading Miami Heat NBA team] and drumming up drama,” the story says.

But after a surge of complaints, the network itself tweeted: "In difficult times, all fans root for the same team. Go Boston.” It was apparently sent in response to the critics, and it seemed to sway the tide, with the message retweeted by more than 6,600 followers, the story says.

“This event directly intersected with what we are about — sports and fans,” ESPN said in a statement. “To not acknowledge it would have been disrespectful. The vast majority of fans have shown their support and have responded favorably.”
