FX’s high-profile vampire project "The Strain," based on a book trilogy by "Hellboy" director Guillermo del Toro, has tapped "House of Cards" star Corey Stoll as its lead, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed. Carlton Cuse is showrunner on the project.

Stoll was offered several broadcast drama pilot leads, but decided to play "The Strain’s” Ephraim Goodweather, the head of a CDC team who investigates a viral outbreak connected to vampirism, the story says.

The pilot for the project, based on a trilogy by del Toro and Chuck Hogan, will be directed by del Toro while the writers will also co-write the pilot.

"To me, having the right lead for ‘The Strain’ series was perhaps the most important creative task,” del Toro said in a statement.
