"Mad Men" star Jon Hamm will host an upcoming awards show that has been described by one publication as “ultra-meaningless.”

Hamm was named to host the ESPYs, which will air live on ESPN on July 17 at 9 p.m. from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre.

New York Magazine’s Vulture blog comments: "Even among meaningless awards, ESPYs are ultra-meaningless — sports has its own system of awards known as winning — but the ceremony is occasionally tolerable, if only for all of the athletes attempting to look mildly surprised despite not being surprised at all.”

Previous hosts include Justin Timberlake and Seth Meyers.
