NCAA Championship Game Surges in Ratings

Monday night’s NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship Game between Louisville and Michigan was a ratings winner for CBS, with the network reporting the game was up 18% from last year’s broadcast in metered markets.

The game delivered a 14.3/23 rating/share in metered markets, the network announced. Overall, coverage of the 2013 "March Madness" tournament by Turner Sports and CBS Sports delivered a 7.2/15 average, an increase of 9% from a year ago. This year’s tournament tied with the 2011 event for the highest overall average for the NCAA Tournament in eight years (7.3/14; 2005).

In the championship game, Louisville beat Michigan 82-76 to claim the national title. The metered-market average of 14.3/23 was up from last year’s 12.1/19, based on Nielsen figures.

The network released the following list of the top five rated metered markets for the title game:

1. Louisville: 54.0/70
2. Detroit: 33.5/47
3. Columbus, Ohio: 26.4/40
4. Indianapolis: 25.1/39
5. Cincinnati: 24.7/38
