New York Times Reporter Responds to Paper’s Negative Review of His Book About Morning TV

A New York Times reporter who received a scathing review from the paper for his new book about the morning TV wars has responded to the negative writeup. Brian Stelter tells TheWrap that he believes The Times’ review of "Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV" "was an anomaly."

As previously reported, The Times hired an outside critic for the review, as is standard operating procedure when it comes to a book written by one of its own employees. The review, by former Dallas Morning News TV critic Ed Bark, called the book "plain silly" and said it suffers from "overblown prose."

Stelter, 27, said he "expected a tough review from The Times." He added, “I want The Times to give tough reviews. That’s partially why I read The Times. But I’m more interested in readers’ reviews.”

Stelter also said he thought the review’s tone wasn’t as bad as some made it out to be. "I don’t think the review is a significant thing positively or negatively,” he said.
