Details about the death of "The Sopranos" star James Gandolfini are emerging. Gandolfini, who died Wednesday at 51, died of cardiac arrest, the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker reports, citing Dr. Claudio Modini, the head of the emergency department at Rome’s Policlinico Umberto I Hospital.

“When he arrived, [he] was already in cardiac arrest. He was put under resuscitation treatment for 40 minutes, but the emergency staff failed to restart his heart, and at 23:00, he was pronounced deceased," Modini said. Modini didn’t personally treat the actor, the story notes.

He added that Gandolfini could have already been dead by the time he reached the hospital because "he was already in cardiac arrest."

Gandolfini arrived at his hotel Wednesday morning and showed no signs of illness, the Times notes, citing Rome’s Il Messaggero newspaper. He dined inside the hotel that night and appeared to be in good spirits, signing autographs.
