The PBS period drama “Downton Abbey” is bringing aboard a high-profile actor for season four. TheWrap.com reports that Emmy winner Paul Giamatti has joined the cast.

Giamatti will appear as the playboy brother of Lady Grantham, played by Elizabeth McGovern. The season is set to launch Jan. 5, 2014.

“The show is a snapshot of a very English way of life, but along with Shirley MacLaine, Giamatti will represent the ugly American relatives of the gentry at the heart of the show,” TheWrap reports. “Giamatti’s character is described by the show’s producers as being ‘rather free-spirited’ and ‘sure to upset the Granthams’ apple cart.’"

Giamatti won an Emmy for HBO’s "John Adams," along with widespread recognition for his work in feature films including "Sideways" and "Win Win." He received an Academy Award nomination for "Cinderella Man."
