'Modern Family' Star's Nonprofit Group Targeted by the IRS WSJ

The Internal Revenue Service was singling out more than conservative and tea party activist groups -- it also targeted a pro-gay marriage nonprofit founded by "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The IRS has admitted its actions weren't appropriate when it singled out applications from tea party and other conservative groups, the story notes. Some liberal organizations were also caught up in the agency's examination, however.

Ferguson's group, called Tie the Knot, raises money to support marriage equality by selling designer bow ties. The group was on a list issued by the IRS last month of "advocacy" groups whose applications were flagged for extra scrutiny because of indications they could engage in political activity, the piece reports.

A spokeswoman for Ferguson and the group said the actor had no comment.
