‘PBS NewsHour’ Plans Layoffs

"PBS NewsHour" is bracing for its first significant staff cuts in decades. The New York Times reports that the moves come after a decline in corporate sponsorship.

The show’s producer, MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, will close its two offices outside of the Washington area — in Denver and San Francisco — and cut most of the employees in those areas.

The cuts are being made to "improve the long-term sustainability of the ‘NewsHour,’" wrote Linda Winslow, the executive producer of “NewsHour,” and Boisfeuillet Jones Jr., the chief executive of MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, in an internal memo, the piece notes.

Some "noncritical production positions" at its main office Arlington, Va., will also be cut.

Earlier this year, it was projected that the production company was facing a funding gap of as much as $7 million, or a quarter of its total budget, the story notes.
