‘Star Trek’ Actor Gets Apology From Ghost Writer Over Facebook Jokes

A ghost writer has given an apology to one of the stars of the original "Star Trek" television series. UPI reports that George Takei, who played Sulu on the 1960s TV show, received the apology from Rick Polito after Polito let it slip that Takei pays him to write his jokes.

The jokes are posted on Facebook and often become huge social-media hits, the report notes.

Polito said he wrote an apology to Takei and his husband, Brad. "I just said that I’d been looking for any mention of my book I could get and that I hadn’t meant to expose anything,” Polito said.

He added, “I don’t update his page. I’ve had no direct contact with George. I’ve sent him some memes, as have other comedian types, and I was happy for the exposure."

Polito said he wrote "funny lines" for Takei at $10 a joke.

The actor brushed off criticism that he used other people to write his material, writing in an email to Wired, "What is this hoo-ha about my FB posts? I have Brad, my husband, to help me and interns to assist. What is important is the reliability of my posts being there to greet my fans with a smile or a giggle every morning. That’s how we keep on growing."
