Another New Summer Series, Another ‘Just OK’ Opening; CBS Gets Good News

NBC rolled out a new series Wednesday night, and like most of the programming opening this summer, it bowed to less-than-spectacular viewer numbers, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the new dramedy "Camp," starring Rachel Griffiths, opened to a 1.5 average rating in viewers 18-49 — good enough to win the 10 p.m. slot against soft broadcast competition. The number was a big improvement — up 36% — over the July 1 premiere of "Siberia," which managed only a 1.1.

NBC’s Wednesday premiere of "America’s Got Talent" was up 4% from the number for last Tuesday’s installment with a 2.7 in the 18-49 demo. Overall, the Peacock Network came in second for prime time in the demo — and first in total viewers.

Winning the night was Fox, which notched a 2.1 and a 2.2 in adults 18-49 for back-to-back installments of "MasterChef." The episodes were down 5% and 12%, respectively, from their June 26 equivalents.

CBS got good ratings news as "Big Brother" climbed 18% from last week’s series low to notch a 2.0 in 18-49. The finale of "The American Baking Competition" equaled last week’s 1.1 average.

ABC came in fifth among the broadcast nets with only two fresh programs: "The Lookout," mired in third place at 10 p.m. with a 0.7 average in viewers 18-49, and the series finale of "Family Tools," which failed to ratchet up much interest with a 0.6, equaling last week’s series low.

For prime time overall, Fox’s 2.1 average led the way in the 18-49 demo, followed by NBC (1.8 average), Univision (1.6), CBS (1.4) and ABC (0.7). NBC topped its rivals in total viewers with 7.3 million, followed by Fox (5.3 million), CBS (4.9 million), Univision (3.8 million) and ABC (2.8 million).
