NBC’s "The Biggest Loser" has booked an "American Idol" winner to compete on the upcoming 15th season of the show. People magazine reports that Ruben Studdard will appear on the reality show as he tries to deal with his obesity.

"I was losing weight, but I was exhausted. It was making me sick," Studdard, 35, said, referring to a 1,200-calorie diet he was on. "I’m a big man. There was no way to do those workouts on that amount of food, so everything was contradicting itself."

Studdard, who weighed 455 pounds at one point, quit that plan after losing 12 pounds, eventually losing 70 pounds in 2006 by becoming vegetarian and exercising, the story says. He began putting on weight again after a divorce in 2012, the piece notes.

Studdard became the second "American Idol" champion in 2003.
