CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta says he has changed his mind about marijuana, and is apologizing for his earlier opposition to the legalization of medical marijuana, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker.

His change of opinion comes as CNN is set to air his documentary "Weed," the story notes.

In an essay called "Why I Changed My Mind on Weed" that was published on CNN’s website, Gupta writes that he had relied on mainstream research for his earlier opinion.

"I didn’t look far enough," he wrote. "I didn’t review papers from smaller labs in other countries doing some remarkable research, and I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis."

He added, "We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that."

"Weed" will air Sunday on CNN.
