Apple’s iPhone Launch Breaks Record — Here Are the Numbers

The three-day launch of Apple’s new iPhone 5S and 5C models was a record breaker, Forbes magazine reports. The rollout saw 9 million units sold, in what the publication calls "a record-breaking streak that will offer some much-needed assurances about Apple’s ability to design new products."

Said Apple CEO Tim Cook: “This is our best iPhone launch yet — more than nine million new iPhones sold — a new record for first weekend sales. The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5S, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”

Forbes adds: "As thousands stood in long lines outside Apple stores, iPhone users eagerly switched to the new operating system. More than 200 million phones now use the redesigned software. Apple says it’s the fastest software upgrade in history."

The three-day sales figures put to rest the fears of some industry watchers.

"Observers had hoped Apple might offer numbers on the very first day, and when it did not, some worried the new phones had fallen flat," the story reports. "Instead, they greatly exceeded expectations. For example, Pipper Jaffray’s Gene Munster had forecast just 5 million in new sales."

The report adds: "The new iPhones come in the 5S model and the 5C. The iPhone 5S, sheathed in aluminum, has a faster processor and a new fingerprint scanner — German hackers already say they’ve broken it — and costs $200 with a contract. It’s available in a muted color range: silver, gold and dark gray. By contrast, the iPhone 5C costs less ($100 with a contract), sells in a variety of candy-colored shells and is aimed at foreign customers more accustomed to cheaper smartphones."
