Miss America marked a first with its annual pageant Sunday night. CNN reports that the organization’s crowning of Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, made her the first American of Indian descent to become Miss America.

Soon afterward, racist tweets began to proliferate on the Internet, the story reports. Among the comments: "If you’re #Miss America you should have to be American." Davuluri is American, the report notes.

Others inaccurately complained that she’s Muslim (Davuluri isn’t Muslim) and repeated stereotypes about Indians, such as calling her Miss 7-11. Other comments made references to terrorism, such as "Miss America right now or miss Al Qaeda?" and "9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?"

The 24-year-old Davuluri, who performed a classical Indian dance with Bollywood moves in the talent portion of the competition, wants to be a doctor, following in the footsteps of her father, CNN notes.

It was the second year in a row that Miss New York won the competition.

The report notes: "Something similar happened when Rima Fakih was crowned Miss USA in 2010. Fakih is of Lebanese descent, and many were quick to try to link her to the militant group Hezbollah."
