Why Networks Will Be Slower to Cancel New Shows This Season

With the new television season kicking off this week, viewers can expect a change in how the networks approach their new crop of shows, reports Media Life Magazine.

The networks will be slower to cancel new shows, given that the broadcasters will be watching how people use time-shifted viewing to catch up on programs, the story says.

"It takes days for Nielsen to deliver three-day DVR playback numbers and weeks for the seven-day ratings to come out, and that will lead to another likely trend this fall," the story reports. "TV shows will get more time to prove themselves."

Of course, sometimes the DVR numbers don’t impact a show. Take NBC’s drama series "Do No Harm," which didn’t see any significant bump from playbacks and was canceled early this year after two episodes.

But other shows do end up seeing notable boosts in viewership from DVR and online playback, such as NBC’s "Chicago Fire," the piece points out.
