BBC and Discovery ‘Essentially Dissolving’ Their Partnership

The BBC and the Discovery Channel are cutting back on their collaborations, according to The New York Times, which reports that the two organizations are "essentially dissolving" a relationship that stems from the 1990s.

The change comes as the two broadcasters have become more like competitors since the deal was first struck. The partnership created natural history shows such as "Planet Earth" and "Blue Planet."

BBC America will instead co-produce some of the BBC’s wildlife documentaries and films, while Discovery will also look to other producers for science and natural history projects. Discovery will continue to work with the BBC on some shows, the story adds.

The BBC wants to raise the awareness of its own branded channel in the U.S., while Discovery wants to own worldwide rights to its programming as it seeks an international reach, the report notes.
