Obama’s FCC Appointments Are Approved

The Senate confirmed President Obama’s two nominations to the Federal Communications Commission after Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) lifted his reservation on Tom Wheeler’s nomination as chairman, reports The New York Times.

Cruz removed his hold on the nomination after he "received assurances from [Wheeler] that the commission would not immediately pursue changes for political advertising on television," the story notes.

Along with Wheeler, Michael O’Rielly was confirmed as a commissioner. The two seats had been empty since March, the story notes. Cruz had expressed concern that Wheeler "would push the FCC to expand disclosure requirements for political advertisements on television," the article notes.

The report adds: "The confirmations of Mr. Wheeler and Mr. O’Rielly bring the agency back to its full strength of five commissioners — three of them Democrats and two Republicans — and will allow the commission to get to work on several pressing issues that have not moved forward since the former chairman, Julius Genachowski, announced his resignation in March."
