‘South Park’ Skewers Cable MSOs and Programmers; Calls a Discovery Network ‘Murder Porn’ TV

"There may be an angry voice mail or three this morning at Comedy Central from some of its fellow media companies after Thursday night’s episode of ‘South Park,’ writes our good friend Andy Wallenstein in Variety.

He adds that Discovery Communications "probably won’t be happy to see the depiction of a cable channel called Discovery ID being repeatedly characterized as a source of “murder porn,” what the show’s kiddie characters call the endless series featuring real-life depictions of spousal homicides. Discovery ID, of course, bears a striking resemblance to Investigation Discovery, a channel that just happens to have a full roster of those shows."

Furthermore, Wallenstein writes, "there’s Time Warner Cable, which isn’t actually referenced in the episode by name but the logos on the shirts of the sadomasochistic cable-company employees depicted in the episodes sure look familiar. Those shirts are also drawn to have flaps that descend to reveal the employee’s nipples, which they rub ecstatically as various ‘South Park’ characters complain to them about everything from the inability to pick cable channels a la carte to the incredibly long waiting times for service repair."

And these two references are only the tip of the iceberg, Wallenstein says.

  1. The South Park guys are exactly right. Just like garbage show like Criminal Minds and Law and Order SVU. All they do is titillate their audience with grisly details thought up by some unstable writers. I’m sure they write these scripts to live out their fantasies. South Park however is hilarious.
