The BBC is already at work remastering newly discovered tapes featuring lost episodes of the original "Doctor Who" television series, according to a Deadline.com story. A video clip (see below) offers a look at the progress of remastering and plans to distribute the shows.

"The BBC has confirmed the recovery of nine ‘Doctor Who’ episodes, which had long been thought missing," Deadline notes. "Reports of the trove first surfaced earlier this week, to the delight of the Tardis faithful, and BBC Worldwide has now made the remastered episodes available for download via iTunes."

In reports earlier this week it was said that more than 100 episodes had surfaced, with the discovery attributed to a find in Ethiopia. The Deadline.com story identifies Nigeria as a source of at least some of the shows.

The new video focuses on nine episodes of the series from the 1960s.

"Back in the fold are five installments of 1967 story ‘The Enemy of the World,’ and four installments of 1968’s ‘The Web of Fear,’ which sees the Time Lord battle a robot yeti in the London Underground," Deadline reports. "All of the episodes feature Patrick Troughton as the 2nd Doctor. Many of the original transmission tapes were destroyed by the BBC, so it’s often copies made for foreign broadcast that turn up to fill in the gaps."

The Deadline report adds: "According to the BBC, there are still 27 ‘Doctor Who’ stories that are missing or have incomplete episodes." The numbers appear to be uncertain, based on comments on the story, with one commenter offering the clarification that 97 episodes are missing (or incomplete), covering 26 "Doctor Who’ stories.
