World Series Game 2: Another Ratings Win for Fox, Another Night of Lows for Rival Nets TVbytheNumbers
Fox found the secret to prime-time ratings success again Thursday night, following up its Wednesday night win -- which was fueled by Game One of the World Series -- with another win for Game Two, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo.
TVbytheNumbers.com reports that Game Two, in which the St. Louis Cardinals evened the Series by beating the Boston Red Sox, delivered a 3.4 preliminary rating in 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. -- up from a 2.9 for the equivalent number last year. The report notes that the year-ago number was eventually adjusted upward to a 3.5.
Some of the other big four broadcast networks, meanwhile, had to endure another round of season lows. Second-place CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" fell three-tenths of a point from last week in the 18-49 demo to a season-low 4.9 -- still the best number for any broadcast show last night.
CBS also saw series lows for freshman comedies "The Millers" (2.8 in 18-49, down four-tenths from last week) and "The Crazy Ones" (2.3, down one-tenth). Two other shows posted increases: "Two and a Half Men" ticked up two-tenths from last week's all-time low to a 2.3, and "Elementary" also bounced back from its series low, rising three-tenths to a 1.8.
ABC notched its own season low, a 3.0 average for "Scandal" in the 18-49 demo, off three-tenths of a point from the previous week. "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" slipped one-tenth to a 1.1, but "Grey's Anatomy" bucked the trend, inching up one-tenth to a 2.8.
NBC was well off the pace of the other major broadcasters, with a repeat of "The Voice" settling for a 1.3 average in viewers 18-49 before the network unspooled two hours of original programs. "Parenthood" matched the "Voice" rerun's 1.3, which also matched last week's number.
Two new NBC Thursday night comedies matched last week's numbers, which represent a pretty low bar: "Sean Saves the World" delivered another 1.1 average in 18-49, and "The Michael J. Fox Show" came in again with a 1.2.
For prime time overall, Fox's 3.4 average led the way in adults 18-49, followed by CBS (2.7 average), ABC (2.3), NBC (1.3) and Univision (1.3). Fox won total viewers with 12.7 million, leading CBS (10.3 million), ABC (7.2 million), NBC (4.6 million) and Univision (3.7 million).
