A spinoff of the hit CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother" has been greenlighted by the network. Writing on Deadline.com, Nellie Andreeva reports that the project, to be called "How I Met Your Dad," received a pilot order.

The new show puts a female spin on the original format, Andreeva reports.

The project was pitched Oct. 30 and comes from "How I Met Your Mother" creators and executive producers Craig Thomas and Carter Bays. "Up All Night" creator and executive producer Emily Spivey is also behind the project.

"How I Met Your Dad" will tell an all-new story, including new characters, although they will meet at MacLaren’s Pub, the favorite spot of the "How I Met Your Mother" crew.

"It is unclear if the characters from the spinoff would be introduced in the ‘HIMYM’ finale as originally envisioned," Andreeva writes.

She adds, "CBS certainly could use more ‘HIMYM’ — the veteran comedy is the key piece holding together the network’s Monday lineup, which has had a rough fall."
