Why ‘Doctor Who’ Fans Say the Series Needs a Spinoff (Watch the Video Here)

Fans of "Doctor Who" are asking the BBC for a spinoff of the 50-year-old franchise, with thousands of people signing a petition that asks for a new show depicting the Eighth Doctor’s adventures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The petition started after the BBC debuted "The Night of the Doctor" online last week, which showed Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor. (See the video below.) The seven-minute episode showed McGann’s doctor regenerating into John Hurt’s "War Doctor," according to the U.K.’s RadioTimes.

One reason fans want to see more of the Eighth Doctor is that McGann previously had only appeared as the character in a 1996 pilot for an American version of the series, which was produced for Fox, THR notes.

The Change.Org petition says, "Even a web series would suffice!" It adds, "It would be a shame for such a fantastic actor and Doctor to be once again confined to the past yet again."

As of Tuesday morning, the petition had more than 11,000 supporters. THR notes that the backers planned to send the petition to the BBC once it passed 10,000 signatures.
