“American Hustle” director and writer David O. Russell has left the ABC drama he was slated to executive produce, reports Nellie Andreeva on Deadline.com.

Russell developed the project, “The Club,” with Susannah Grant, CBS TV Studios and studio-based Timberman-Beverly. ABC greenlighted the project with a straight-to-series 13-episode order, the story notes.

That order remains in place after Russell’s departure.

“Russell, nominated for writing and directing Oscars for ‘American Hustle,’ is expected to refocus fully on features. It is not unusual for big-name filmmakers to back out of a TV project, often pulled away by feature commitments,” the story notes.

“The Club” is an upstairs/downstairs drama set at a country club. It has cast Callie Hernandez of “Sin City 2” as Ana, a worker at the club who secretly steals items to pawn.
