Brian Williams Apologizes for Slight to One of the Players in Late-Night TV

After failing to include one of the key players in late-night during a feature on the changing late-night landscape, NBC’s Brian Williams issued an apology on “NBC Nightly News,” reports Deadline.com’s Lisa de Moraes.

Williams apparently forgot about Arsenio Hall’s new show for a photo montage featuring late-night hosts, the report notes, and the oversight sparked criticism of the piece from Hall.

The trouble started when NBC News aired a piece Monday night about Jimmy Fallon’s debut, which included photos of late-night stars. In addition to Fallon, the montage included Chelsea Handler, Andy Cohen, Carson Daly, David Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. It did not include Seth Meyers, whose debut on NBC’s “Late Night” is set for next week.

"In a voice-over, Williams was heard talking about all the media types ‘slugging it out for the turf Johnny Carson used to own,’" the report notes.

On his show on Tuesday night, Hall said he wanted Williams to know that he wasn’t happy about being left out and urged fans to call NBC News, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker. He even announced the phone number on-air.

Hall said during his show: “If you’re doing a story about late-night, all I ask is that you mention me. You don’t even have to use a photo. … I know how journalism is these days — use Samuel Jackson — it doesn’t even have to be my photo. Use Laurence Fishburne. … Just mention me.” Hall also made the point that he’s the only current late-night host “who competed and survived against Johnny Carson.”

Williams responded in his Wednesday night broadcast, saying: “Arsenio is a late-night veteran and he took us to task on his show. He even urged audience members to call our newsroom. He added, “So, in apologizing to Arsenio we just wanted to point out that at least you’re in good company here,” noting that NBC News once left the state of New Hampshire off a map.

Here’s a clip of Hall’s comments on his show Tuesday night, where Williams is not his only target:
