CNN Abandons News and Entertainment Block a Year After Its Debut

CNN is shuttering a news and entertainment block just one year after its debut. Media Moves reports that the service is pulling the plug on the eight-hour syndicated block CNN Latino, which will cease operations later this month.

“Apparently, not everything was possible for CNN Latino,” the story notes, referring to the block’s slogan, “Todo es posible.”

An unknown number of employees will lose their jobs with the cancellation of the block, the story reports.

In a statement, the cable news network said: “CNN Latino was a bold effort to continue CNN’s commitment to the U.S. Hispanic marketplace. Unfortunately, despite the great efforts of many talented people, CNN Latino was not able to fulfill our business expectations and we are discontinuing the programming this month. Over the course of the past year we learned a lot and we will use what we learned to continue to innovate and evolve our presence in the Hispanic community.”

Isabel Bucaram, a spokesperson for CNN en Espanol, said: “CNN Latino staff will be impacted, but CNNE staff personnel will not." The report adds: "She would not elaborate as to the number of employees [who] will lose their jobs with the cancellation of CNN Latino."

The service, which produced syndicated Spanish-language content for U.S. Latinos, was picked up by stations in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Miami and Tampa. Some of the local stations complemented the syndicated content with their own programming, such as the local KBEH program “Sin Limites” in Los Angeles, hosted by Elizabeth Espinosa.

"Sarykarmen Rivera quit her job at Telemundo Austin to join CNN Latino Tampa Bay as anchor of a local news magazine morning show called ‘Buenos Dias Tampa Bay,’" the report notes.

“No word yet on whether any of those shows will survive after CNN Latino’s closure, but it seems unlikely,” the piece adds.
