Action star Dwayne Johnson, who first made his mark as the pro wrestler The Rock, will star in and executive produce a new HBO series. Deadline.com reports that the pay-cable channel ordered Johnson’s dramedy project "Ballers" to series.

The show will be the first major series role for Johnson, a regular in the "Fast & Furious" feature films. He will also executive produce with Mark Wahlberg, Steve Levinson, showrunner Evan Reilly and pilot director Peter Berg, the story notes.

“Ballers” is about former and current football players, with Johnson portraying retired player Spencer Strasmore. The project also stars John David Washington, Denzel Washington’s son, as a competitive and spiritual pro athlete, and Rob Corddry as a financial adviser.

Denzel Washington is a two-time Oscar winner, for "Glory" (1989) and "Training Day" (2001). John David Washington, 29, played football at Morehouse College and is just getting his acting career started.
