A counterprogramming event scored a big ratings win on Super Bowl Sunday, topping everything else on cable that night. The Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker reports that Animal Planet’s “Puppy Bowl X” pulled in 13.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched telecast of the night on cable.

“The adorable show, which pits pound pups against each other in a furry-tastic game of faux-football, was also the most tweeted "Puppy Bowl" ever, generating more than 340,000 tweets and trending on Facebook for much of the day,” the story reports.

The telecast likely received a boost from its celebrity appearances, which included President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, with their first dogs Bo and Sunny. Other guests included Ricky Gervais and Rob Lowe.

All the pets featured were up for adoption, and most have already found homes, the piece adds. The pets included dozens of puppies and kittens, along with hedgehog cheerleaders and hamster sports reporters who fly in a blimp above the tiny stadium.
