A star who had a successful eight-season run on NBC’s hit comedy series "Will & Grace" is back in business with the Peacock Network. After beefing up her TV resume on USA Network’s "The Starter Wife" and the NBC musical drama "Smash," Debra Messing will play the lead in the drama pilot "The Mysteries of Laura, Deadline.com reports.

With Messing signed on, the project’s cast contingency is lifted, the story reports.

"Messing is set for the title role in the pilot, written by Jeff Rake and directed by McG. Based on the popular Spanish series ‘Los Misterios De Laura,’ ‘The Mysteries of Laura’ follows the life and relationships of Laura Diamond (Messing), a female homicide detective who can handle murderous criminals — but not her hell-raising twin children," the article reports.

The project will be produced by Warner Bros. TV, Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.

"Production on the pilot and the series will be moved to New York, where Messing is based," the report notes. "Messing is making her Broadway debut in John Patrick Shanley’s play ‘Outside Mullingar’ and will segue to ‘Mysteries of Laura’ after wrapping her well-received stage run."
