ABC Family Scraps Controversial Drama Project

ABC Family has scrapped plans for a drama after the project sparked an outcry. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that the cable channel pulled the plug on the pilot “Alice in Arabia” after receiving objections about how the project would portray Muslims.

As previously reported, a Muslim civil liberties group opposed the project, which is about a teen kidnapped by her Saudi Arabian extended family. The Council on American-Islamic Relations asked to sit down with ABC Family executives to discuss its concerns about potential stereotypes.

“The current conversation surrounding our pilot was not what we had envisioned and is certainly not conducive to the creative process, so we’ve decided not to move forward with this project," an ABC Family spokesperson said in a statement.

CAIR said it was happy about the resolution, and thanked those who expressed concerns about the project.
