Broadcasters Find an Ally in Their High-Stakes Battle Against Aereo

With the broadcast networks’ case against Aereo in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court, the broadcasters have found an ally in U.S. Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr.

TheWrap.com reports that Verrilli has asked to be allowed to argue his view endorsing the broadcasters in their case against the streaming service, a move that bolsters the networks’ support form the Justice Department.

Verrilli had previously filed a friend of the court brief that provided support for the broadcasters, the story notes. The high court will hear oral arguments April 22.

The court hasn’t yet made a decision on Verrilli’s request.

“In originally siding with broadcasters including ABC, NBCU, CBS, and PBS who have claimed that Aereo is engaged in copyright violation, Verrilli said that Aereo transmission of broadcasters signals over the Web amounted to copyright infringement,” the piece notes.
