Broadcasters Find an Important Ally in Their Battle With Aereo

Broadcasters who are locked in a legal battle with the Internet video streaming company Aereo have found a key ally: the Department of Justice.

The Los Angeles Times’ Company Town reports that the department filed a brief Monday at the Supreme Court, stating that the DoJ views Aereo as “clearly infringing” on the copyrights of broadcasters. The brief said a lower court ruling that found the service legal should be overturned.

That ruling, from the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, will be considered next month when the Supreme Court hears the broadcasters’ appeal, the story reports.

“The Justice Department siding with broadcasters is the second big win for the industry in the last few weeks. Last month, a federal court in Utah sided with broadcasters and said Aereo will have to shut down its operations there and in Colorado,” the publication notes.
