The actor who portrayed Captain Video on the early TV adventure series “Captain Video and his Video Rangers” has died. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Richard Coogan died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 99.

The show, which ran on the DuMont Television Network from 1949-55, was watched by both adults and children, and broadcast live five or six days a week.

“‘Captain Video and His Video Rangers’ started off from scratch, no advance notice or publicity. It caught on so rapidly that we caught up with Milton Berle’s rating, and he was Mr. Television!” Coogan said in a 2003 interview with the Archive of American Television.

Coogan quit in 1950, when he grew unhappy with the show’s small budget. He was replaced by Al Hodge, the story notes. “Captain Video” appeared in another TV show, in a 1955 episode of “The Honeymooners.” In one scene, Ed hogs a TV set he shares with Ralph so that he can watch his favorite program: “Captain Video.”

Coogan later went on to play Marshal Matthew Wayne on NBC’s “The Californians,” which ran from 1957-59, and also appeared on “Love of Life,” a CBS soap opera,” for six years.
