Discovery Communications Founder Stepping Down

One of the key players at Discovery Communications is stepping down. The Los Angeles Times reports that company founder John Hendricks plans to retire as chairman in May, stepping down three decades after debuting Discovery Channel in 1985.

Hendricks, who worked in academia before starting the cable network, said he plans to “spend the next few years traveling the planet and discovering the questions and mysteries that intrigue us all."

The story notes, “When Hendricks created Discovery, there was very little original programming on cable TV. With backing from cable mogul John Malone, he turned Discovery into an educational outlet with a heavy focus on nature, science and space.”

The company didn’t say who will succeed Hendricks when he steps down at its May 16 annual meeting, although Discovery President and Chief Executive David Zaslav would be a likely choice, the piece adds.
