One of the big questions early in the Emmy season — in which category will HBO’s “True Detective” compete — has been answered. Writing on Deadline.com, Nellie Andreeva reports that the program will compete as a drama series.

“The project, created by Nic Pizzolatto and starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was sold and done as an eight-episode limited series, which easily would’ve qualified it as a miniseries,” Andreeva points out.

“American Horror Story,” which competed as a drama series in the 2012 Golden Globes, switched to longform for the 2012 Emmy Awards, and has dominated, earning 17 Emmy nominations last year.

The drama field, meanwhile, is much more competitive — but it may also have more prestige. Competing for Emmys as a miniseries “would’ve pretty much guaranteed the moody Louisiana series a dominant performance and a slew of trophies," Andreeva writes. "Now it will go against the final installment of AMC’s ‘Breaking Bad’ among other drama heavyweights."
