What’s the hottest planet in reality television? Deadline.com reports that a second reality TV project is in the works about a mission to Mars, which is becoming a hot commodity in the genre.

Following Lionsgate TV’s announcement of plans to chronicle Mars One’s mission to the red planet, Thinkfactory Media is working on a new project with the Mars Society, a non-profit that’s focused on exploration and settlement of the planet.

The latest project, “Mission to Mars,” will document the Mars Society’s simulated Mars project in the Canadian Arctic, the piece notes. The production company is in talks with two unnamed outlets after taking the project out to networks last week.

“According to Thinkfactory EVP Adam Reed, their project is further along, with a six-person habitat already built on Canada’s Devon Island in the Arctic, and it has NASA’s cooperation,” the story notes. “After a lengthy location search, with its harsh climate the deserted island, which features a 14-mile crater, was deemed the closest environment to Mars that can be found on Earth.”

Six scientists, picked from an initial application pool of 200, will move into the 1,000-square-foot complex.

“It has everything six scientists would need for a year,” Reed said, including a science lab and engineering space.

The six scientists will wear space suits when they leave the habitat, and although they’ll be followed by TV cameras, will only have communication with mission control, the story says.
