Cablevision Systems has named a new chief operating officer, filling the role left vacant by Tom Rutledge. Multichannel News reports that the company appointed Kristin Dolan, the wife of Chief Executive James Dolan, to the post.

The Dolans reportedly had a trial separation last year but remain married, the story notes. Cablevision declined to comment on their personal relationship.

The COO role has been vacant since Rutledge, now the chief executive of Charter Communications, resigned in 2011.

Kristin Dolan “has been moving steadily up the ranks," the story reports. "She was named president of Optimum Services last April, responsible for all Optimum products, brand positioning and customer service. Dolan has a strong background in marketing and led efforts to introduce new products and product enhancements, including faster broadband speeds, and oversaw the rollout of its Onyx platform."

James Dolan also said he would give up the title of president, which will now be given to Brian Sweeney, his brother-in-law, the story adds. Sweeney, who most recently was senior executive vice president, strategy, and chief of staff to the CEO, will continue to work with Dolan on strategy and management.

Sweeney “will also work with Kristin Dolan and the company’s other senior executives on the day-to-day oversight of the company’s operations," the story reports. "He maintains direct oversight of the company’s key strategic initiatives, the engineering, technology and business intelligence groups as well as Cablevision’s local media properties, including Newsday Media Group and News 12 Networks."
