Fox Wins by Default as Broadcast Nets Break Out the Reruns

With ABC, CBS and NBC all airing prime-time slates leaning heavily toward repeat programming Wednesday night, Fox walked away with a ratings win even though "American Idol" continued to erode, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that Fox's two-hour "Idol" fell 5% from a week ago, registering a 1.9 average in 18-49, which was good enough to beat NBC's all-repeat lineup and slates on CBS and ABC that featured just one fresh program apiece.

CBS's lone original, "Survivor," was the top show of the night with a 2.2 average in adults 18-49. But that number was a series low, and down 8% from a week ago. CBS rounded out prime time with repeats of "Criminal Minds" (1.4 average) and "CSI" (1.2).

ABC's only fresh program was "Mixology," which equaled last week's modest 1.2 average in 18-49. Repeats of "The Middle" (1.2 average), "Suburgatory" (1.0), "Modern Family" (1.5) and "Nashville" (0.7) failed to spark much viewer interest, as ABC finished fifth overall among the broadcast nets.

NBC's three drama repeats — two "Law & Order: SVU" installments (1.1 average in 18-49 and a 1.3) and "Chicago PD" (1.0) — were good enough for a tie for third place with Univision.

For prime time overall, Fox's 1.9 average in the 18-49 demo led the way, followed by CBS (1.6), Univision and NBC (both 1.2) and ABC (1.1). Fox also took total viewers, averaging 8.4 million to lead CBS (7.7 million), NBC (4.7 million), ABC (3.8 million) and Univision (3.0 million).
