Syfy has ordered a series adaptation of the Brad Pitt movie “12 Monkeys.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that the cable channel ordered 13 episodes of the drama.

The series will debut in January 2015 and star Aaron Stanford of “Nikita” and Amanda Schull of “Suits.” The project is about a time traveler sent back from a bleak future with the goal of eliminating the source of a deadly plague.

The piece notes, “The series pickup — coming just a week after Syfy renewed outbreak thriller ‘Helix’ for a second run — arrives as the NBCUniversal-owned cable network has made returning to its sci-fi/fantasy roots a la ‘Battlestar Galactica’ more of a priority under new network president Dave Howe.”
