The death of 36-year-old Swedish film director Malik Bendjelloul, whose documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" won an Academy Award in 2013, is being called a suicide, with Reuters reporting that a family member confirmed it.

As we reported earlier today, Police said Bendjelloul died late Tuesday in the Stockholm area.

Johar Bendjelloul, the director's brother, sent a text message to Reuters in which he said: "I can confirm my brother has taken his own life."

In the Chicago Tribune's report from Reuters, it notes: "'Searching for Sugar Man,' structured like a mystery, followed two South African journalists trying to track down American singer Sixto Rodriguez after his disappearance from the public scene.

"Rodriguez had failed to achieve fame in the United States but, unbeknownst to him, had become a popular and influential folk icon in South Africa."
