A longtime trend at local TV stations is beginning to reverse itself. Writing on the website of RTDNA — Radio Television Digital News Association, Hofstra Professor Emeritus Bob Papper reports that more stations are originating local news this year, with the number rising to 719 stations this year — two more than in 2013.

The increase is the first in nine years, the story reports.

The stations also run news on an additional 307 stations, with 1,026 stations in total airing local news, the story notes. However, the average amount of news on local TV slipped by 6 minutes, while the average time remained unchanged for Saturdays and Sundays.

“Generally, the bigger the market and the bigger the news staff, the more news a station is likely to run,” Papper wrote.

News directors are reportedly projecting more news for next year, according to the article.

By network affiliation, the 719 local stations producing news include 182 NBC affiliates, 175 ABC affiliates, 173 CBS affiliates and 70 Fox affiliates, along with 37 Univision stations and a number of smaller groups.

The 307 stations that get their news from another station include 97 Fox affiliates, 47 CW affiliates, 36 MyNetworkTV affiliates, 35 CBS affiliates, 29 ABC affiliates and 21 NBC affiliates.
