British Comedian Rik Mayall, Who Starred in 'The Young Ones,' Dead at 56 NY Times
Rik Mayall, a British comedian who starred on the 1980s show “The Young Ones,” has died. The New York Times reports that Mayall died Monday at his home in London. He was 56.
Mayall's management company announced his death but didn’t disclose the cause.
Mayall was most familiar to audiences through his work on “The Young Ones,” which The Times describes as “an anarchic and frequently surreal sitcom about four college students sharing a dilapidated house.” Mayall’s character was a sociology student and wanna-be anarchist. Behind the scenes, the comedian was a creator of the show and one of its writers.
The program aired on BBC from 1982 to 1984 in the U.K., and was shown in the U.S. on MTV and later on PBS, Comedy Central and BBC America.
Mayall was injured in 1998 while riding a quad bike, a popular vehicle in Britain, and was in a coma for several days. He recovered and had been working recently, the piece adds.
