FCC Investigating Netflix Claims About Comcast and Verizon

The FCC has started a review of Netflix’s complaints about Comcast and Verizon Communications, after the streaming service raised questions about having to pay extra to broadband providers to ensure fast video delivery to customers, reports Re/code.

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said Friday that his agency has started a review of the disputes. “What is going on and what can the FCC do on behalf of consumers?” Wheeler said at a press conference about the investigation.

“Consumers pay their ISP and they pay content providers like Hulu, Netflix or Amazon. Then when they don’t get good service they wonder what is going on,” he said. “I have experienced these problems myself and know how exasperating it can be.”

As it’s not a formal investigation, it’s unclear what the FCC could do if it uncovers something in the review, the story notes. “Wheeler told reporters that the agency could take action under its broad authority to ensure regulated companies are operating in the interest of the public,” the piece adds.
