A former “American Idol” contestant apologized for actions on the Fox News Channel show “Fox & Friends” that some felt disrespected U.S. troops. The Hollywood Reporter’s Idol Worship reports that Chris Daughtry issued the apology.

The singer had performed as part of the program’s All-American Summer Concert Series. When he was asked to perform a patriotic song in honor of D-Day, he turned it down, the story says.

“I'm off the clock," he said. "I'm going to watch y'all."

Then the hosts tried to come up with a song that the crowd could sing, and Daughtry said, “This is where I’ll bail.”

Twitter users were irate over his handling of the situation, with one writer pointing out that U.S. soldiers “didn’t go off the clock” on D-Day.

Daughtry released a video apology, saying he was “embarrassed” and “ashamed” of his actions. “It was absolutely disrespectful," he said. "Poor choice of words, terrible judgment on my part. … I wish that I could have pulled it together."

He added that he was unprepared to handle the request and he “panicked.”
