‘Lion King’ Sequel Headed to TV

“The Lion King” is coming to television as both a TV movie and a series. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that Disney Junior ordered an animated sequel to the hit Disney movie.

The new program will be aimed at children 2-7 years old. The movie will air in the fall of 2015, with a series slated for early 2016, to be featured on both Disney Junior and the Disney Channel. The voice cast hasn’t yet been announced.

The project will focus on the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, who takes charge of the Lion Guard. Kion, the cub, asks his friends — who aren’t lions — to help him with the task, breaking the tradition of asking only young lions to serve.

The other characters include a honey badger, a cheetah, a hippo and an egret.
