Nicki Minaj won best female hip hop artist at Sunday's BET awards for the fifth consecutive year, on a night when Beyonce, Pharrell Williams and Drake were also among the big winners.

The ceremony was reportedly tainted by news of violence at events related to the awards.

"A dark cloud hung over this year's telecast before it even began," TheWrap.com reports. "One person was killed and at least five others injured when violence unfolded at two separate parties that were being touted as BET Awards-related this weekend in Los Angeles. The network told TheWrap that the events were unauthorized and unaffiliated with the awards show."

At the ceremony, Drake was named best male hip hop artist, while Williams won best male R&B/pop artist and video of the year for "Happy."

Beyonce won best female R&B/pop artist and best collaboration, for "Drunk in Love" featuring Jay Z. She also won the FANdemonium Award.

The awards also honored films, with "12 Years a Slave" being named best movie.

The awards show, hosted by Chris Rock, aired live Sunday from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles.
