A cable series that premiered Sunday chalked up the highest-rated debut for a new series on cable this year. EW.com's Inside TV reports that TNT's new action series “The Last Ship” pulled off the achievement.

The show drew 5.3 million viewers in its initial airing. With encore telecasts, that reached 7.4 million viewers, the piece notes. The drama led in to the alien-invasion drama “Falling Skies,” which drew 3.7 million viewers in its return.

The series is created by Hank Steinberg and Steve Kane, based on William Brinkley's 1988 post-apocalyptic novel of the same name. Michael Bay is an executive producer on “The Last Ship,” which stars Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra and Adam Baldwin.
