Cinemax Orders Second Season of Series -- Even Before Its First Season Premieres THR

Cinemax apparently likes what it sees from a project that has yet to debut on the pay-cable channel. The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed reports that the channel gave an early pickup for a second season of Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick.”

The historical drama is scheduled to debut Aug. 8. “The Knick” stars Clive Owen in a medical drama about the staff at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in 1900. The staff try to save and heal patients at a time before antibiotics, and when the mortality rate was considerably higher.

Soderbergh, who is directing the entire season, told reporters that he “wanted to be a big kid in a small school,” talking about wanting to air the show on HBO’s sibling network Cinemax. He said he intends to continue to direct the second season.

The renewal was announced at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
