The chief meteorologist for a local TV station was seriously injured in a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July. B&C reports that Dave Rexroth of Detroit station WXYZ-TV lost sight in his left eye.

Rexworth, who has worked for the Scripps-owned ABC station for 14 years, was visiting family in Iowa City, Iowa, when the accident took place, according to WXYZ. He will undergo surgery Wednesday and be fitted with a prosthetic eye, the station said. Rexworth is expected to recover by September.

“Everybody here has him in their thoughts and prayers,” WXYZ general manager Ed Fernandez told B&C. “If I know Dave, he’ll come through stronger. He’s a phenomenal meteorologist and a better person.”
